Buffs and Mops
A polishing mop is not just a bearer of polishing abrasive to a part. The design and construction of the wheel can be imperative in establishing the best process in terms of efficiency and surface finish.
Our expertise in being able to design the correct buff for you and then make it bespoke (rather than taking an 'off the shelf') can make a real difference to your polishing.
We can help you improve performance, increase life and reduce rejects to give the triple boost of reduced spend on consumable, reduced spend on labour time and reduced scrap value.
Buffs and Mops can be roughly categorised as ‘for manual polishing’ or ‘for automatic polishing’.
Manual polishing buffs are used where a human operator is polishing, they tend to be smaller in diameter and have narrower head widths. The spindle can be ‘fixed’ where the operator brings the part to the polishing wheel, or it can be ‘flexible drive’ where the operator brings the polishing wheel to the part.
Automatic polishing can be semi-automatic where an operator may load / unload parts and / or apply polishing compound or fully automatic where a conveyor and robot or CNC controls these aspects.
The following constructions of buffs and mops are available - View Table >
Manual Buffs
Manual buffs are available in diameters from 1” (25mm) up to 16” (400mm) and face widths from ¼” (6mm) up to 4” (100mm) depending on the construction and application.
Stitching can firm up a buff, create longer life, but also balance the amount of give and ability to profile the work. It can also help the compound adhere thus improving performance and life.
Our stitching that is available:
v/c/s - 3/16”
c/s - 1/4”
o/s - 3/8”
v/o/s - 1/2”
Ring sewn at any diameter upon request.
For most constructions the standard diameter for use on a polishing spindle would be 4” up to 10”.
For flexible drives we would recommend no larger than 6” (150mm).
We offer each type of buff in different grades according to application, giving different amounts of cut, gloss, flexibility, compound adhesion and life.
Our sisal is sourced from the best farms in Asia and Mexico and constructed into buffs in our factory in England.
We strive for the highest quality cloth to ensure best finish, long life and consistent performance. Our cotton is mainly sourced in India and woven in mills in India and Europe. It is treated by finishers in Europe and the UK.
The buffs are constructed in our factory in England or at our partners in Europe.

Automatic Buffs
Automatic polishing buffs can have a wide range of diameters and head widths according to the machine and the process. The automation may be ‘indexing rotary’ or ‘flat-bed reciprocating head’ or ‘robotic copy’ or ‘centreless rollers’ or an amalgamation of more than one technique.
Automatic buffs are available from 8” (200mm) up to 1 metre diameter, normally banked in ½” – 1” (12mm- 25mm) sections that may give an overall head width of 6” (150mm) up to 6’ (2m).
