Materials

Material surfaces can be treated in a variety of ways to improve the aesthetics and/or change the functionality. Stainless Steel, Brass, Aluminium, Silver, Titanium, Gold, Acrylic, Polyester, Gelcoats and many other materials can all be improved by polishing - transforming a manufactured object into a sought after luxury item commanding better prices or improved functionality.

Polishing and buffing (like sanding and linishing) alter the surface by making it more smooth and reducing high points and low points. Plating, anodizing, coating are other potential surface treatment processes that often need a prerequisite polished surface to ensure their success.

Lea Manufacturing have developed polishing compounds that combine the best quality abrasives giving speed of cut and durability with the most efficient binder systems to enable optimum mop head build and lubrication.

This combination varies according to the attributes of different materials.

Take a look at our list of materials below to find out more about each of them.

Materials Treated using our Polishing Products

Brass & Copper Alloys

Brass has strength and malleability requiring hardness to cut the surface and the best quality abrasives to ensure there are no defects that become amplified by plating. Copper deposits need to be buffed with super fine abrasives for the best appearance.

Aluminium

Aluminium needs binder systems with good lubrication preventing dragging and sharp abrasives to achieve a polished surface quickly whilst preventing overheating and metal distortion. Particle distribution is a paramount consideration if the parts are to be anodized.

Stainless Steels

Stainless Steel can be highly polished and buffed in stages to give a mirror-like gloss to surfaces. High Carbon Steels used in tooling and machinery can be very hard wearing and must have the hardest abrasives accordingly.

Precious Metals

Precious Metals can be polished to an exquisite finish with superfine abrasives to ensure best prices without removing too much valuable metal.

Exotic Alloys

Exotic Alloys are used in many high tech industries such as aerospace, oil and gas, surgery, toolmaking etc. they can be designed to have specific functionality such as smoothness, accuracy, resistance to fracture and cracks. These can require the most narrow distribution width of abrasive particles and highly consistent polishing compounds.

Zinc Alloys

Zinc Alloys need to be smooth and clean to ensure the best plating deposits.

Gelcoats

Gelcoats are best polished with a sequence of coarse to fine high grade abrasives.

Plastics & Other Materials

Plastics such as acrylics require a soft polishing compound to reduce scratching and other plastics have to have low heat build up to reduce thermoplasticity. Other Materials that can be polished include horn, wood, bone, gemstones, mother of pearl, granite, and others all requiring the best attention to polishing compound to give the best results.
